How to Make Mug Toppers

Where did I get Mug Toppers Cutters from?

I bought these cookie cutters from Frosted by Nicci she also has a palm springers gingerbread house that I have also made. They make great mug toppers to give as gifts to the ones we are spending the holidays with.

For the Sugar Cookie Dough

Whisk the butter and sugar until the butter is lighter. It shouldn’t be to fluffy. Then add the egg. Mix until combined. Then add the vanilla and flour. Fold flour in by hand until a dough forms. Place down baking paper than dough and then another layer of baking paper. Roll out to a 1.5cm thickness. Then place in the fridge and chill over night or a least 3 hours. Cut house the shapes with the cutter. I was able to cut out enough for three mini sugar cookie houses. Line a silicone mat on a baking tray as this will allow an even bake for the sugar cookie and prevent bubbling. Bake for 12 minutes in a 180c oven.

Icing the Tops of the Mug Toppers

Make a stiff peak royal icing. Then put some in a bowl and colour brown. I like to use food colour powder but you can use gel food colouring. I then added a small amount of water to create a hybrid flood that I could use to outline and flood the cookie. The rest of the royal icing I added white food powder and left it thick.

Sugar Cookie House

Assembling the Mug Toppers

I used the thick consistency royal icing and piped it on the edges of where the two cookies will meet. Once I the two sides of the house were on I had difficulty placing the 4 wall on. I realised of I place one of the sides with the door cut out on the bottom then place to sides on and the last one it worked better. I then put a mini fan on them to let the icing dry.

Placing the Decorated Sugar cookies on a Hot Chocolate Mug

The Sugar Cookies turned out nice and buttery. There was some pieces that broke because I rolled them to thin. It was my first try at these mini cookie house and I am impressed with how they turned out. I think it is a great way practice your royal icing consistency which I one of my baking goals for the year. I did wrap some in clear cellophane to give to my mum and sisters.

Another Christmas recipe to try is my White Christmas Slice.
